This is quite a common problem with a very easy fix.
so someones sent you a document be it Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc that's been made in a newer version of office and uses a different file type. what you need to do is download the Office Compatibility pack from Microsoft, after installing it and restarting any office applications you will be able to open the new file types (docx, xlsx, pptx,etc)
